Why Bath Fits The UK Route

We have a whole episode on your, you know, in throw guide to your rail, so we can link that in the show notes. But we wanted to, we knew some of the tiny towns or remote places we wanted to visit just would not be possible without a car. With the train.

So we flew into London as our entry point, but yeah.

Yeah. So what is fun is that Bath was on the way to Cornwall. Like it's in between London and Cornwall, and we had never been there before. And so since I'm obsessed with Bath, it felt like we had to visit Bath. I had been wanting to anyway.

So I just have to say here, not that I'm afraid to drive in London. No. I've driven all over the world, Paris, you know, whatever.

Train First, Then Rent A Car

But you're not gonna pick it. No, you're not gonna like raise your hand and volunteer.

Intentionally, I mean come on. So we took the train from London Town to Bath, which is a whole story in itself. We rented a car in Bath, and I did drive all the time on the wrong side of the road for like a couple of weeks, right?

Yeah, he did, y'all.

And that's one full day in the city of Bath, right? Right.

SPEAKER_00 4:56

But we chose Bath because it was enough outside of London and out of the crazy traffic, and we could rent a car there and still be kind of central for the rest of the trip. So that's kind of just even a little booking tip for you. Yeah. Is you don't necessarily have to rent the rental car where you're gonna be.

And for us it worked really well. And Bath, it was awesome.

And it's not massive. So even with just one day, we felt like we could really just capture the heart of the town. So it was really great.

So it's a very walkable city. And on the first night, we basically arrived kind of in evening time. So Rory found a park where somewhere to park.

Well, I asked the hotel where and they suggested where. And I went there and parked and then walked back. It was a the walk was less than 10 minutes, I think. So it was really great.

Yeah. And so we did everything pretty much on foot, and which we love. So our first stop at dinner was at the giggling squid.

First Impressions Of Bath On Foot

And of course, our first stop was dinner. Giggling Squid. What an interesting name.

What name? And what a place. Oh my gosh.

The place was as interesting as the name. Like whimsical comes to mind.

It had this whole garden vibe and it had inside. Mm-hmm. Like this gazebo paradise with hanging florals and greenery and stuff.

Yeah, it was cozy but um elevated.

Yes. And it's one of those places where you immediately want to photograph like everything and take a gazillion pictures.

It's such a tourist. It's awesome.

And it's right around the corner where we stayed at the Z Hotel.

We loved that room.

Man, it was compact, but like really efficient and cool. I'd never seen a room like it really.

No, it was so cool.

Totally cool. We liked it. Very thoughtful design.

It had like little stairs up to the upstairs bed. There were two beds in the room.

Yeah, it was like a two-level bedroom.

The bathroom was cool. Like it was just very tiny, but laid out and very thoughtful. And then the upstairs bed had a TV with it on the wall.

So you had your kind of your own TV thing. And one thing I appreciate was a lighting. If you're going to have a small space, I'm a lighting guy, right? So if you're going to have a small space, they used lighting to great effect so that each space and the overall room kind of had its own little lighting thing. So if someone's asleep in the bed next to you or below you, you've got your own little lighting thing and stuff that's not going to mess them up. It was really, really uh well done.

So super tiny and compact, but you still felt like you had space for everything you needed to do. And it's exactly what you want after a travel heavy day. Yes. So in our short day, we walked around and we saw the Roman baths, the Bath Abbey, the Royal Crescent, circuits.

There's a series on there where they show a great It's it's centered, the show is centered in Bath.

Dinner At Giggling Squid

Yeah, and they have show a great view from the sky of Bath and the Royal Crescent just pokes right out. We drove round it a few times, but uh really cool. The way the city's laid out is really nice.

Right. So Poultany Bridge, we're gonna get to that. Just the architecture alone feels like an experience in Bath. And the town is just so neat and it's so like consistent in its color. The consistency of the stone and the curves and the way everything is there. It feels intentional. Yeah. And but but it's all very matchy. Like it's very right.

Like I just remember everything. Like all the buildings had very similar coloring and this uh kind of yellow-ish.

But it's really cool based on to the Roman period.

Yeah, thus and the Roman enticing baths and the name of the city.

Yes. Bath. And we so from Par from Parade Gardens, you can see this incredible bridge. Let's dive into Pulteney Bridge, because for me that was a high. We actually did not we were just there as kind of a stopping route on the way to Cornwall. Uh-huh. So we did not pay to go into the actual baths tour, but we could see the building, and you can kind of like peek over the window, you know, the top of it and look in. And so we at least got a little peek at the baths. Yeah, that'd be fun to spend a whole day just doing that. So we but walked around.

Tiny Yet Clever: Z Hotel Review

Yeah, we walked around. She walked around and I walked around separately. And then we met at Pulteney Bridge Coffee. Of course, it's the morning. I need to have coffee.

And what was really cool, they had some wonderful breakfast that we had. We're sitting, it's built onto slash into the bridge. Like they used to do. They live in city walls. Well, of course, they lived in the bridge. It's so cool. And it overlooks this wonderful cascading river below.

Yeah, water. It's it's so cool. So we sat there in this place that was hundreds of years old. Maybe a thousand years. I don't know. But like I said, the Roman period, hundreds, maybe a thousand years old. I don't know. Do you remember the history? I don't remember the history.

I no, I used to be a few. I love history, but it was so cool. I just like the vibe when I'm there. I'm I'm into the present.

Oh, and we're looking out the windows at this beautiful view, and we have really good food.

There's restaurants and shops like bit literally built into the bridge walls.

We met for breakfast at Pultenay Bridge Coffee. It's a really cool, popular spot. Obviously, we want to go to the popular spot to have breakfast. But it was cool because locals were having breakfast there too. They had cinnamon buns and stuff. But I, when I walked in, saw that a couple was having pancakes, like American type pancakes. And you're like, hmm, ah, that's what I need. Yep.

Well, I got to the counter and I saw that they had a chocolate, avocado, hello, and matcha, hello, cake. And I was like, I love all those things.

All together in the same thing.

Oh my gosh, it was so good.

Was it served in a cup?

So good. Okay, we're gonna talk about the cake in a minute. Yeah. Let's talk, let's go back to the cafe itself.

Yeah, so it's located on that historic Fulkney Bridge that we've been talking about. They have good coffee, delicious cakes and scones and options, also like a full English breakfast.

So that was a place I liked.

And we later got like a sandwich to for takeaway.

So they made that too. Happy to do that.

It had architectural, like really cool views, and we were able to get a table that like overlooked the water. So that was really great.

And it's a small, intimate space. So we were really glad that the we kicked that couple out so that you know we could take their table. Anyway, yeah, it was great. A really nice atmosphere, intimate feeling. It's not a big place.

Iconic Sights: Baths, Abbey, Crescent, Bridge

No. Yeah. If you look at reviews of the place, it's talked about as being great value for the money. So that's good to know, too, because you know, being Americans, we lose money in England with the exchange. So yeah, you want good value.

Well, what was really valuable to me was finding this cake. So I mean, of course, I ordered tea to drink, but having tea in my cake also like made me such a happy person. For those of you who don't know, I have actually started my own organic loose leaf tea company. And so what's it called? Oh, it's called Vegabond Teas.

Vegabond teas, like vagabond, but vegabond. Like vegan, vegabond teas.

Vagabond, okay. But they at Poultine Bridge Coffee had a coffee avocado matcha cake. It was super, super moist, crazy good. And we are recording and releasing this in January, which is my birthday month.

So, what we're gonna do this month in honor of this episode and bringing our travels home because this is our room to home episode, we're going to try to recreate a vegan version of this delicious cake at home. So, so good, such a memorable thing, and something we definitely want to take home and repeat.

All right, now, right near the cafe was the bath museum. And so this was such a wild moment because as we're eating, I'm looking out the window and I keep seeing the sign for the current exhibition. And you know what it was? It was took a big thing. It was a picture we recommend we recognize all the time because I'm in that bathroom every day. We have a bathroom.

We have wallpaper with his art designs all over the bathroom. It's so much crazy.

So we recognize the design the art that they had out front because it's the same we have on the wall of our bathroom.

Same guy, they were doing the whole exhibit of Toulouse Loutre's artwork.

And so the timing was like amazingly perfect and tied, like it was just super ironic and funny, too, that we're in bath and it's like with our bathroom.

Great. Well, so I tried to get in. We again were didn't have all the time in the world, but I tried to get in and I couldn't find like even the door to open. So I think they were just closed that day. So unfortunately, I didn't get to go in and see the actual exhibit, but it was still a crazy fun that it was there when we were there. Now, another way that we're bringing bath home is well, the bath itself. And so one travel tip that is super important to me is I always carry a tub stopper with me.

Breakfast On Pulteney Bridge

I have used it all over the world. So, like if we're in a place there where it has a bathtub but the stopper doesn't work, I can still take a bath.

And if there's no stopper and it doesn't hold water, is it really a bathtub?

SPEAKER_00 15:32

I don't know. My brain can't handle the questions like that right now. But like if I needed to hand wash clothes and the sink didn't have a good stopper, then I could use that and hand wash my clothes.

Yeah, I've seen her use showers with like six inches where they could hold like six to eight inches of water. She puts her stopper in the bottom and sits in the shower.

Yeah. I'm kind of really love bats.

And so anyway, but we've also used it for other creative travel scenarios where having the stopper came in handy. So while walk-in showers are taking over hotels and homes, for me, there's nothing like a hot bath where I can truly relax and unwind, maybe do a facial sometime, little masks, any of that. But there's even research showing that the drop in body temperature that when you get out of a hot bath, that actually improves sleep quality. It's called the cooling effect, and it's really, really awesome. So it's really good for your sleep. So that's probably one reason I love them right before bed.

There is this area in bath where I think the cathedral's there, and it's sort of an open area square. They had some market things happening there, but they also had somebody out there performing opera. So neat. Yeah.

So as you're just kind of walking around and exploring, everybody's out and about, and the town is so quiet before the shop's open. And as soon as the shops open, like 10 a.m. or so, yeah, everybody is just now out and about and filling the town. And there is just so much to walk around and see from just little gardens to shops, lots of beautiful experiences.

We were kind of in a hurry, so we did a driving tour. We walked that morning and looked around, but we didn't really explore the city deeply, unfortunately. Yeah. But we did drive around and we got to drive through the crescent and all of that a number of times. So Yeah.

We really recommend visiting Bath. And again, what was so great is you you could spend a good bit of time, but it's also a great, like, if you don't have time, you're gonna see a lot in a short period of time. Yeah, you don't know because of how it's later.

Now, y'all, we recently finished up our series on visiting Big Bend. And if you remember, we stayed at the Gay Hotel. Well, when we went there in the bathroom, we noticed these bottles with the word roam written across them. And of course, that caught our attention, made us happy, and we were so intrigued. And we thought it was so fun to find like a fellow roaming brand out in the wild. So, y'all, it turns out they thought it was just as fun as we did because they are sponsoring today's episode. We are living in our home as we're going to be renovating it. But I take de-stressing baths almost every night. And these products work beautifully for both Rome and home. Like your home needs to feel like it's a wonderful place to find respite and calm. And for me, my bath soaks at the end of the day, right before I go to bed. That's where I unpack my brain. That's where I can de stress and to have the environment where that bath can be a really nice, relaxing spot away from all of the craziness. When you have those special places that make you feel special and pampered without having to travel somewhere to do that, but you can feel that way at home, your frame of mind is so much more at peace. And you have so much more of you to offer those around you, to offer those that live with you, to offer those that you see every day at work. That environment that you create at home is affects every other area of your life. So even little touches can make a big, big impact various areas in your everyday life.
