Hi, I'm Alexa and I'm Rory, and together we are the Romies.
Speaker 2:We are married To each other Right.
Speaker 1:We are a touring musical duo.
Speaker 2:And our music has taken us to all kinds of places all around the world and keeps us always on the go.
Speaker 1:So we hope you enjoy our stories and adventures while running around working to keep all your plates spinning.
Speaker 2:And we hope, to facilitate your busy lifestyle and feed your inner travel bug.
Speaker 3:Hi everyone. We hope that you have been enjoying our latest series on Placentia, belize, and specifically within that Serenian Bay Resort and Villas where we had the privilege of getting to stay and experience our excursions and experience Belize for the first time.
Speaker 1:And experience Belize's only all-inclusive resort.
Speaker 3:Yeah, Very cool.
Speaker 1:A boutique.
Speaker 3:Yes.
Speaker 1:All-inclusive resort.
Speaker 3:There are a few other resorts in Belize that have kind of a version of all inclusive but they're not all inclusive the way that it really means all inclusive, except Serenian Bay. It's very special. We are so privileged that we got to go experiences with you this past month. We have also been able to interview Brian Montgomery who is the. You know, he and his wife started the founders and owners.
Speaker 3:Yes, so just hearing kind of their dreams and their passions behind the resort, behind the people of the village and all of the things they're doing, is super wonderful. You're going to hear just a couple excerpts again from Brian, but we wanted to just like talk to you, talk you through, like some of the amenities of the actual resort. We've taken you through the town, we've taken you on excursions, we've taken you on our waterfall tour, all of those kinds of things, placentia itself. But we wanted to dive in and specifically talk about what we experienced on Serenian Bay, like if we were just kind of not doing anything else on the island and we were there here's all of the wonderful things you can do.
Speaker 3:So, rory, I think we should start out with our room. Oh yeah, okay, so like, our amenities, because it's a resort, so where are you going to be staying?
Speaker 1:right? Yeah Well, I think to call it our room would be like I don't know like an understatement. Yeah, like call it a 747, a bird. Yeah, our room was a two story villa.
Speaker 5:Yeah.
Speaker 1:The, the, the downstairs, huge living space with an outdoor shower, a full bath inside an outdoor shower. Let's see what else there was the, of course, the fridge and all these kinds of things. There was no kitchen, because there's no point in a kitchen. It's an all-inclusive resort. Anytime you want something, you can either walk out and get it or pick up the phone and they'll bring it right to you.
Speaker 3:When we walked into, like the main door, the entrance, there was a couch on the bottom, this really cool table, so just a nice seating area, and then that bathroom that Rory was telling you about and the fridge. Then there's a stairway that goes upstairs and you have a loft area, and so in the loft area was our bedroom, and the view of the bed faces the water.
Speaker 1:The ocean. There's nothing between our villa and the ocean, just some sand, yeah, like the beach, just some sand, that's all, and some palm trees.
Speaker 3:So that, and then behind the bed is the bathroom portion, and so the bathroom let's talk about that. That had a super cool bathtub. I'm a bath girl If y'all have been following us and listening, y'all know I need my baths, and so it had a nice big bathtub. So even if I didn't have a hot tub or my own pool at the at the resort I, it was a really nice big, deep bathtub with jets, and then we had a full shower, yeah, huge shower, walk-in shower. Bathtub and then a double sink.
Speaker 1:Yeah, so you walk in the front front door downstairs. First of all, there's a porch. You come around and you're at the front of the villa and there's a porch.
Speaker 3:you can sit on Wait, so you're starting down at the beginning again. I'm outside.
Speaker 1:You walk around to the front of, like I said, you walk around to the front of the thing, outside, and there's this porch, a wonderful porch, with a seating area, a table, and you're looking right there at the ocean. That's what. Maybe 30, 20, 30, 20 yards away would you say, maybe 30, but there's nothing between you and the ocean except sand and palm trees. It's awesome. So you walk in and, as she said, there's the couch there and then, further on an eating area, to the right's the bath, and then you walk outside through the bath and there's an outdoor shower.
Speaker 1:Now, as you walk in, if you turn directly right, there are the stairs, like you walk to the right, to the stairs, in between the stairs and the bathroom. You're with me now on this far right wall. As you're walking, you're looking at your far right wall. There's the big TV and everything. All that stuff's there. So all that stuff exists. We did I don't think we even turned the TV on. What's the point? Where we were staying? I don't think we even turned it on. But, okay, you go up the stairs and you there's a big wardrobe, yeah, big wardrobe. And then, as you turn left, there's this big full bath, big bath with double vanity, a huge mirror and if you continue turning left, you walk along the banister, the stairs that I mean. She called it a loft, but it's it's a huge bedroom.
Speaker 1:So yeah, it is a loft, it is a loft.
Speaker 3:It's. It's a huge bedroom. So, yeah, it is a lot. It is a lot like so it's open on that side. Villa yeah, and every single villa and and um room in at the resort are completely different and they all have different names based on uh, brian shared with us that each one kind of has a story, so ours is called pelican, because it overlooks the water.
Speaker 1:Yeah, pelicans rise high in the sky and float and along that line. We're on the second floor of ours and, like I said, huge sleeping area, and she mentioned it faces the ocean. All glass sliding doors face the ocean. You walk outside onto your second floor deck and, speaking of, you know, thinking of the, the Pelicans floating through the air. On the left side of your deck is your own private little pool.
Speaker 3:It was so cool.
Speaker 1:Ridiculous, so you can float in the air in your pool. It was so awesome.
Speaker 3:I mean, it was like a little mini pool.
Speaker 1:Man.
Speaker 3:And it was really wonderful.
Speaker 1:Yeah, all AC'd, all AC'd. So it's like super cool, as in like comfortable air conditioning, and then we would leave the door open a little bit to hear the ocean at night. And it was amazing being perfectly comfortable and cool listening to that ocean at night. Oh man, Our place was great. Oh, and since it was the Pelican, our front door it's all wooden. They do all their own woodwork and everything. So all the furniture inside they built all the wood furniture and stuff which you know Our door is carved, full door size.
Speaker 1:Carving of a Pelican Our villa was ridiculous, amazing.
Speaker 3:We vote that you ask for the Pelican because it is really cool.
Speaker 3:We haven't stayed in the others, but we right I did get to see another one and you'll you'll see a little glimpse of another beachfront villa that they have. They have a turtle villa that has a private pool and a palapa. You'll get a little. You'll see a little glimpse of that as well on our socials. The rooms themselves are really great, but we spent most of the time on our deck upstairs. We were down. We were very little downstairs. It was really fun to be on a second floor overlooking the beach and the water and having that pool next to you, being in it or next to it all are good.
Speaker 1:We ate out there. Ran out there.
Speaker 3:Yeah, just comfy seating to just lay out, rest and etc. So all of the rooms. Brian had mentioned this in our um a previous episode about how he wanted to bring all of the fun amenities that we might be used to as americans and that we can enjoy there, and so there's full air conditioning. The other thing is that there is an Alexa, so, where I mentioned the TV, if you wanted the TV on, you could have just said hey, alexa, turn on the TV.
Speaker 1:Yeah, or change the temperature from the air conditioning.
Speaker 3:So all of that stuff. There was an Alexa, so I mean we had two Alexas in the room at that point, right.
Speaker 1:So the pool area is like on the side where we stayed, where all the villas and stuff currently are. It's like the center of everything, and everything there is open to the beach. It's really cool. Snooty's Bar, like we said, is right there with the swim-up bar. There's also a beach grill next to the pool and that whole side features the ocean and the beach essentially.
Speaker 3:So, speaking of the pool and bar area, that reminds me of all the restaurants. So there are several restaurants on the Serenian Bay property and Marco is the head chef and connoisseur, and all of that and like everyone else, a super nice guy Right right, right, and so there are a lot of. You have your all-inclusive that is part of your package, but there are some add-ons that you can get, and so Marco is going to talk us through.
Speaker 1:we had this big event and we got to talk with Marco directly Wine tasting and all kind of stuff that they had, and Marco was giving a presentation basically about all the extra things that you can have. It's basically endless and you'll hear at the end of this little short conversation that I have with Marco that he'll talk about hey, you dream it up, they'll try and create it.
Speaker 3:Yes, but the things they already have kind of in place that are ready for you, ready to go. Here's Marco.
Speaker 5:Yes, dinner on the beach, backstage class, culinary class, wine tasting, rum tasting those are not part of the all-inclusive, those are additional charges and if guests are interested to do, and that's when I come in and book it and set the time and then we go ahead and set it up on the beach.
Speaker 1:So they can tell you what they love and what their desire and the reason they're traveling. Yes, you can work with them and develop some special dinner on the beach just to go along with what their passion is yes, that's right and um, that's that's why we call it the guest signature experience.
Speaker 1:That is so cool. Yeah, thank you, man, you're welcome. In addition to all of that like something that Marco didn't talk about on the recording, but he talked about to us you can have a private chef service. I mean how ridiculous A private bartender service they can do. I think he just mentioned Dinner on the Beach. You dream it up? Bartender service they can do. I think he just mentioned Dinner on the Beach. You dream it up? No-transcript, Check this out. You can have a private butler. So I mean, these are some amazing offerings that they offer to be redundant offerings.
Speaker 3:Well, yeah, as an add-on, yeah add-ons that you can do. The first thing I did. We put our bags down and I walked over and I got me a paddleboard. So included within your stay, there's not an extra charge you can kayak a paddleboard. So included within your stay, there's not an extra charge. You can kayak or paddleboard, and so, since I think paddleboarding is way better than kayaking, that's my personal vote.
Speaker 3:Rory's more of a kayak fan, but you can sit on a paddleboard and do the same thing. So, anyway, that's my little speech. So I grabbed a paddleboard and got in that water right away, and so that was really cool. They just sent someone over to help me get in the water with the paddleboard they had there, and so I really enjoyed the paddleboarding. It was quite windy and you are on the ocean, so different from the little river that we have in Waco, so that is available to you as well, right there at Serenium Bay.
Speaker 1:Oh, I got to mention I forgot to talk about this At our villa, when we got upstairs to our bedroom, these ridiculous, amazing towel sculptures would you call them that? They had these swans and facing each other. That made a heart between their bodies. It was pretty awesome.
Speaker 3:Yeah, and little decorations with, like the toilet paper.
Speaker 1:Yeah, all those little things that at really nice places that you run into. You know, after all, this is an exclusive boutique resort. And downstairs, when we came in, was this gorgeous flower bouquet in our villa as well. Really cool. This is the thing we had a plunge pool on our second floor, on our balcony, we talked about, but they have private pools at several of their villas. I know they have manatee, seahorse, turtle. I mean it's really cool. You've got options here. The villa we stayed in had the one bedroom big loft bedroom upstairs with the king size bed that was bigger than any king size I've ever slept in.
Speaker 3:It was a really big bed yeah.
Speaker 1:I mean, and they probably could bring in other beds for others if you had, you know, your children with you or friends or something but if you want to bring your family I love traveling with family and we used to go on vacations as a family when I was a kid and stuff they have these huge villas you can stay in. The Manatee Villa sleeps 14. You've got your own private pool and their own hot tub and this palapa. As Alexa mentioned, there's also the Seahorse Villa, which sleeps 10, again with a private pool, amazing outdoor space. It's just really great the options you have. And these are beautiful villa home things. I mean gorgeous. We might post some pictures from them uh, from a couple of them we're gonna post some pictures from these things.
Speaker 3:Yes, so follow us on. Instagram and Facebook at the Romies.
Speaker 1:Yeah, so that that side of the resort is where we stayed, but there's like a street it's sort of the main street that goes down the the peninsula. Yeah, so that side of the resort is where we stayed, but there's like a street it's sort of the main street that goes down the peninsula. Yeah, but when I say main street, that's an exaggeration, right, but you see a car Every so often. Yeah, every so often. It's not like you're crossing a big busy street and it's dangerous or anything like that, but across the street. You walk directly across the street from where we are, and to the right right there is Inky's, one of their restaurants.
Speaker 3:And Brian Montgomery, the owner, is going to tell us a little bit of history about Inky's.
Speaker 4:So you asked about Inky's. Inky's is our entertainment side of the resort. That's across the street from the resort. That's where we go the mini golf, the pickleball, the gym, the dive pool and all the other amenities we have here. Chicken and bleeds is very good. They do a lot of great craftsmanship when it comes to wood.
Speaker 4:When we first walked here, a guy was driving by one day and pulled in. He didn't need any wood. I go, no, sir. But he had this big old piece of wood in the back of his truck and he goes do you want it? I go, sir, I really don't need that. He said give me $100. I don't want. He unloaded it. I put it in the back, on the back of the property, left it there for many months Until one day I was walking around and I saw it and I went and started counting and I looked and it had a head in the middle and it was like all these vines coming out of it.
Speaker 4:I go, hmm. So I started counting the little arms and there was 18 of them and I go hmm, what else has 18? 18 holes of golf. So in my mind I'm starting to envision Inky holding golf clubs. You know, 18 clubs of golf and I go huh, it wasn't Inky at the time, so he's an octopus. I said that octopus is going to be my mascot, so I'm going to have an octopus as my mascot. So then I need a name for the octopus.
Speaker 4:So I started researching octopuses. I came across Inky the Octopus and there's actually a children's book named Inky the Octopus as well. But the real Inky the Octopus was in New Zealand. He escaped the aquarium in New Zealand because octopuses can escape very, very small holes. They're very, very elusive. They can escape very, very small holes. So he escaped the aquarium and they couldn't find him. The rumors were he made his way to the Great Barrier Reef of Belize. That was the rumors. So I say you know what? We found him. We're going to memorialize Inky for thinking about Belize. So we memorialized Inky's at our mini golf and restaurant. So that's how Inky has been. Everything has stories here to invite.
Speaker 1:There at Inky's there's a mini golf. I say putt-putt, whatever A mini golf course right there and I played it. Okay, it ate my lunch. It was super fun, Really fun. It's set up like a jungle kind of atmosphere. Each hole has its own carving of an animal and boy. It is challenging. It's really pretty.
Speaker 3:And we talked about what a famous course it is in a previous episode, so make sure you check that out and learn more about this golf course. So you've got mini golf as a part of your package.
Speaker 4:So you don't have to pay additional.
Speaker 3:You just, when you're in the mood, just walk up, play for the amount of time you want to play, but it is a full 18 holes, and so that is why they have the 19th hole as one of their restaurants. Inky's 19th hole Isn't that the name of?
Speaker 1:it. Well, that's a classic thing at golf courses to have the 19th Hole, which is the restaurant, or at some resorts it is actually 19th Hole, it's just an extra hole that you can play. That's sort of separate from the course.
Speaker 5:But right there, next to Inky's is the mini golf.
Speaker 1:It's Inky's, and then you cross over a little footbridge and there's your pickleball tennis. Right now they have tennis pickleball swimming pool and if you're at Inky's and you turn left instead of going right to mini golf, you've got this amazing exercise facility downstairs, with a boardroom upstairs.
Speaker 3:Okay, rory, you're going too fast, you're going too fast.
Speaker 1:Oh, come on, you got to follow me on this.
Speaker 3:Let's just stop at the pickleball tennis real quick. At the time of this recording there is tennis, but they are going to, over time, be extending their pickleball options and offerings. They currently have pickleball. It's used in tournaments et cetera. Brian can tell us a little bit about that?
Speaker 4:all right. So this is our pickleball. So you notice the courts are probably different than anything we played on. This is called sports court towel. The reason I got it is it's good for old folks like me it gives, so there's a little gift to it which causes your knees not to pop like on concrete, because we do have an expat retirement community here. The concrete courses are hard on their knees. So I went ahead and went with sports courts. It's been very successful. It also, as you can tell from the raining water, gets rid of water very fast. Whereas a lot of course that go with regular court, you can't play on it when it's wet. This you can play on it as soon as it rains. So it's called sports course towel. Like we do a lot of memberships, we have a locker room over here, a man and woman locker room. Uh, the lockers, showers, toilets and all they're connected for them to use here so they are putting in very high quality amenities here.
Speaker 3:So the pickleball. Then you mentioned the pool, Rory, that pool, like you can, it's a separate pool from the pool that all of the villas face right, so it's a second pool that you can utilize. But what's really fun is it's often utilized for the diving training that we talked about in our episode with Captain Jacks. So if you are not yet certified, you can do a lot of your coursework and get certified there. And then you are ready for all of your excursions, if you want to go scuba, and so they can offer that to you and that pool is used for that training.
Speaker 3:And just to kind of recap with the golf course Rory, while I went paddle boarding you watched a little bit of my paddle time, but then you went and you played the mini golf and it was fun, right.
Speaker 1:Yeah, it was a lot of fun. Yeah, I was blessed. Okay, so, Rory, I think I'm now catching up with you. I think the last thing you mentioned was the workout room. Come on, try and keep up. The bottom floor of this building there to the left of Inky's is this. I mean, I've never been to a resort I was going to say hotel but a resort that had an exercise room that was any better, what equipped, than this one with the things they have. It's real, fully air conditioned, by the way.
Speaker 3:Yeah, fully air conditioned, which is rare to find in.
Speaker 1:Belize yeah, it's got machines, it's got free weights, even Plus mats and balls Yoga balls, they call them that, I don't know Whatever Yoga mats and big balls and stuff like that. Everything that you could want, I think, especially if you're on vacation. Come on.
Speaker 3:Yeah, and it's not a giant gym, but it's got everything you would need or want to just get a good in, you know. Build your muscle strength with these fun additional.
Speaker 1:Yeah, she says it's not a giant gym, but if you think about a hotel gym, it is a giant gym. It's not a small room, it's, it's a, you know, it's really large size room. And then, above that I'd mentioned, there's a boardroom that if you have these important meetings, you can use the boardroom and above that, like if you have these important meetings, you can use the boardroom.
Speaker 1:And above that Like, if you're doing a conference that you want to do there, yeah, and it's fully equipped. You've got the screen where you can project and do calls whatever whether it's Zoom or whatever calls in there and stuff like that. And then on the top of it all, on the roof is a martini bar and at night the sunset over the lagoon is absolutely gorgeous. I did a time lapse that maybe we'll post and show them. Okay, okay, a time lapse of the sunset Ridiculously pretty, yeah, it's really cool.
Speaker 3:What's really fun about this area is that there is this really cool tree that has all of these like it's all twisted and like super cool looking.
Speaker 1:Well, at the center of the bar and it's at the center of the whole room he told us a story about that. There's a vine that grows there. They thought it was a tree. I mean meaning they, the foreigners that are from there but it was a vine so they're not foreigners there yeah, yeah, the locals that show them there was a vine.
Speaker 1:There is a vine that grows around a tree. I mean, it encases the entire tree, and the tree is like the core of this vine. The vine is several inches thick all around, so what they did is they took the tree out of the vine, and it's actually this vine that looks like a hollowed out tree, which is the centerpiece of the bar. Really cool.
Speaker 3:Yeah, and one night we got to have dinner out there and they had live music from a local band that gave kind of some stories behind they. They played like cover tunes that you would recognize.
Speaker 1:But they added their Belizean style.
Speaker 3:Yeah. So it was really neat to have the whole cultural experience. And so Marco, that evening had set up like homemade tortillas that they they were making right there in front of you and had this whole beautiful spread, well, food that represents all their different cultures that make up the people groups.
Speaker 1:So she talked about one of our other episodes.
Speaker 3:Right, so check those out. So check that out.
Speaker 1:And each of the people groups were represented with their foods. That they're you know they're famous for.
Speaker 3:And so you get to enjoy all of that and the music that kind of brought it all together.
Speaker 1:Yeah, super.
Speaker 3:So that was a fun experience that they had there and one of the things that they offer.
Speaker 1:Yep, oh, we have to talk about this Before we cross the street. There is the spa and you took treatment in the spa.
Speaker 3:Yeah, I definitely signed up for that. What was really wonderful is that when you go to book your spa options or to see what they are, you can connect with them through WhatsApp and message them, and it's so much easier and you don't have to worry about like, is there a time difference?
Speaker 3:And you know, making a call and trying to communicate and all of that. And it's easy to communicate because if you are in America and speak English, then that's what they do, which we've talked about before, but so it's really easy to book. But I just having that WhatsApp and just being able to like message and I was like, hey, I'm looking for this one looked good and this one looked good, Can you help me decide? And they were like this one's blah, blah, blah, blah. So I was able to like, have a little chat, conversation and book my spa experience ahead of time. And it was really, it was really neat.
Speaker 3:I did a coffee scrub and so I was like, all right, she's going to scrub out all my cellulite before I go walk these beaches. So, anyways, I did like a coffee scrub and it was just really neat because she shared with me hey, this is our little formula here and so you can make it at home. And all of that was very helpful. Not with my coffee, no, not with your coffee. And so I did like the coffee scrub. She scrubbed my whole body and that was fun. Normally when I go to a spa. I want a massage and a facial, but I wanted I thought you know what.
Speaker 3:I'm in a new country, I'm going to try something new and do more like a body treatment and so I got the coffee scrub so they could scrub out all my cellulite before I go walk the beach and all you know. And so I got the coffee scrub and then part of that, after she scrubbed me down with the coffee and that's really good for the skin and all that. But then she did it ended with this wrap and I got so it was like a cooling wrap and I got so cold and she's and I was like, is this going to warm up at some point? She's like, yep, I'm gonna wrap you all up. And she wrapped me in banana leaves and that was really cool and so I warmed up and then I just stay like in that wrap for a little bit and let all of the goodness.
Speaker 1:So you were like a banana, like they could have peeled the leaves off, and then you were underneath. Yes, well, there weren't any big monkeys nearby.
Speaker 3:So I got kind of like two treatments in one. It was really nice. And then, like while you're wrapped up, they give you like a little scalp massage and all that good stuff.
Speaker 1:Your scalp was relaxing.
Speaker 3:Yes, so there were lots of like. Just within that one treatment, I got like a lot of goodies, and that's what I really liked about their spa services is, I feel like you get a lot of bang for your buck with like these different things.
Speaker 1:I mean it's kind of indicative of the way they do everything there. Nothing is just as much as they have to do to get by, because that's what they said.
Speaker 5:They would do.
Speaker 1:It's always they go over the top. Everything's beyond, above the line, as they would say their service is definitely-.
Speaker 2:Brian would like to hear that. Yes.
Speaker 1:Brian, your service is definitely above the line, bro.
Speaker 3:Speaking of Brian, he described really well the different packages We've mentioned our catamaran excursion and in other episodes we've talked about, like different resorts and villas that are options with you when you come to placentia. You can split up your visit stay at serenium bay a few days. Stay on the catamaran a few days stay on the island a few days yeah, so there's all of these things, so brian's going to share a little bit more about how all of that works and how that goes. Take it away, brian.
Speaker 4:Absolutely Well. You know what we do, that as well, and I'm not sure you're aware of this. We have partnerships with jungle resorts. You know Chalk Creek is one of our partners where they sell us, we sell them. They have guests for their beach jungle retreats, where our guests go stay there three or four nights and come stay with us three or four nights. So it's packages, so we don't package with other places. So, yeah, anyone wants to look at combo, which I highly recommend, by the way? Yes, I think if you're going to come spend seven to ten days in belize, I highly highly recommend actually checking out other places. You know, go to chalk creek, get that experience of a jungle feel the jungle resort and then come here, right, I think that only enhances your whole beliefs experience.
Speaker 1:So where they are as a resort is not the level they're going to stay at. They're increasing all the time. They've got these new villas they're building and bungalows that are going to be on the lagoon side and a whole new spa, and the area where they're building is gorgeous. So it's an amazing place right now. In the next couple of years it's going to be redonkulous.
Speaker 3:Yes, so we hope that we've given you a lot of ideas and resources to be able to come and enjoy Placentia, belize, and we have some travel agents in the show notes that you can access who have enjoyed these experiences themselves, and some you're going to meet on our podcast very soon. Yes, so stay tuned for that and stay inspired. Plan your next trip, even if you just need to do a day trip somewhere yesterday.
Speaker 3:so we're currently recording this episode in finland and yesterday yeah, we drove four hours for a day trip there and back, and you can do little day trips, so be planning your next excursion and get Placentia, belize, into your agenda as well, and enjoy these resources. Thanks for joining us and we will see you on the next episode.
Speaker 1:We hope we've inspired you. This will see you on the next episode, that's T-H-E-R-O-A-M-I-E-S, and our main hub is our website at wwwtheromyscom, that's right, that's.
Speaker 2:T-H-E-R-O-A-M-I-E-Scom. We'll be there until next time. Yeah, thanks for listening. Bye.
