Speaker 1:

Hi, I'm Alexa and I'm Rory, and together we are the Romies. We are married To each other. Right? We are a touring musical duo.

Speaker 2:

And our music has taken us to all kinds of places all around the world and keeps us always on the go.

Speaker 1:

So we hope you enjoy our stories and adventures while running around working to keep all your plates spinning.

Speaker 2:

And, we hope, to facilitate your busy lifestyle and feed your inner travel bug. Hi y'all, we are kicking off a new summer series and we're taking you with us to Placencia, belize yes, not to be confused with placenta.

Speaker 1:

Placencia is aia is a place, not a thing. Well, I guess it's a thing too. Did you really say?

Speaker 2:

that yeah.

Speaker 1:

So all right, so let's go.

Speaker 2:

All right. Well, this started over like 15, 20 years ago, something like that in Nashville, when our friend Nyla told us that she was from Belize.

Speaker 1:

Yes, and for me it started even sooner earlier, really Earlier, yeah, when I was a boy. Sooner earlier, really Earlier. Yeah, when I was a boy what? When I was a younger boy than I am now. We used to fly down to Honduras in the summers to work with the homeless and street kids and stuff my family did and we would always land in Belize on the way down.

Speaker 2:

What? Yes, I've always known of Belize.

Speaker 1:

So you've technically been to Belize. Yeah Well, technically yeah.

Speaker 2:

Braggart, I didn't even know that. I didn't even know that.

Speaker 1:

Whatever Okay. So, speaking of Nyla, she's just one of those people that you meet and you instantly fall in love with them Right. She's super great I mean not like her husband Scott did, but Right.

Speaker 2:

But just yes, she's smart, beautiful, super nice, and she made us this incredible Belizean meal. It was so fun which. I still think about it, and ever since then we have wanted to go to Belize.

Speaker 1:

And finally we made it. Yes, we visited Plasencia and stayed at the beautiful Cyrenian Bay Resort and Villas.

Speaker 2:

So over the next few weeks we're going to be sharing our full trip, our favorite tips, local flavors and inspiring stories.

Speaker 1:

And we're originally calling it our Serenian.

Speaker 2:

Bay Series. He gave me this look like say this with me, Well, it was kind of like.

Speaker 1:

it's such an original name that we came up with. It's creative, I should say, and today's episode is all about getting to placentia yes, so getting there.

Speaker 2:

So we're gonna break down this episode. This is we're gonna give you some practical nuts and bolts. We're gonna first talk about what to pack yep.

Speaker 1:

And then flights and getting there yep. Currency, language and culture. Yep planning your stay.

Speaker 2:

Yes, and number five.

Speaker 1:

Visiting. Oh sorry, Planning your transportation. Very good, very good, all right, I don't know why I do that, but I can't help it sometimes. You're just so talented that you have to share all the sides of your vocal talent. Yeah, yes.

Speaker 2:

And accents, and stuff yeah Now. Which we're going to talk about in a pack. So what? The pack, rory, plus I will pack you because I like you to come with me, but besides your spouse, placentia is casual, tropical and beachy beachy so you got to pack accordingly. So you want lightweight, breathable clothing like cotton and linen, things like that. Um think, shorts, tanks, t-shirts, sundresses, cover that kind of stuff.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and for me multiple swimsuits, because you know, one's drying. You don't want to put on a wet swimsuit. Some people do.

Speaker 2:

I'm just saying but you do want to be in the water like every day, and especially the where, like where we were staying. There were multiple water options. And so you like wanted to do all of them and you kind of, but then you're doing like a meal in between them or you're doing something, so it's nice to not be able to take it on, put it off and not put on wet take it on and put it off.

Speaker 1:

You know what I? Mean right right and if you're like me, if you're not like me, I don't like flip-flops and sandals because the sand between dirt between my toes is just me, you might want to bring your sandals or flip flops. Yes, and closed toed shoes for excursions and hiking.

Speaker 2:

Yes.

Speaker 1:

Because excursions are a really great thing to do you really want to do that? And, according to my wife, water shoes are a must if you're headed to waterfalls, rivers or rocky beaches.

Speaker 2:

And if you're paddle boarding at the resort.

Speaker 1:

That's what she says, but we're going to talk about that later.

Speaker 2:

All right, bring wide brimmed hats so that you can keep your skin young and beautiful. Sunglasses, reef safe, sunscreen, insect repellents and they have a local one that they encourage people to get for sand fleas and they call them notsiums.

Speaker 1:

And they will bite you yeah.

Speaker 2:

And they call them not-see-ums Mm-hmm, and they will bite you. Yeah, but you can also bring your Avon.

Speaker 1:

Skin so Soft.

Speaker 2:

Yes, that's supposed to be really good to just rub on your skin for those little guys.

Speaker 1:

Okay.

Speaker 2:

And a long-sleeve shirt keeps not only sun protection but also bug protection.

Speaker 1:

Okay, also reusable water bottle.

Speaker 2:

I like that Waterproof phone pouch, which was awesome for snorkeling, so bring that and boat rides or pick one up while you're there Because again, you're going to be in the water.

Speaker 1:

Yep Small first aid kit. You know, because you will get scratches and bites, and the resort had one, but you might want to bring one along. Camera scratches and bites, and the resort had one, but you might want to bring one along camera, which is your phone. So bring your phone and a portable charger.

Speaker 2:

I love the little bricks you can travel with to charge your phone those are great. And a beach bag. Yes, I had a. Just uh, I folded up the bag in my main suitcase, or whatever that I brought over things about the space of a shirt for like day trips and stuff is really easy and great so optionals yeah, right towel clips it's just stuff to bring, but yeah flavor packets for water.

Speaker 2:

If you're into that, or your e-boost if you like that a small dry bag right for your clothes when you're going home, and what you don't need to bring is aloe vera if you stay at Serenian Bay.

Speaker 1:

That's right, they got it.

Speaker 2:

They have their own gardens and their own grounds and we just got fresh aloe like from their garden. We just asked their people that are helping there, and we said hey, You're holding the aloe leaf in your hand. Yes, and one day they knew we were on an excursion and we came home.

Speaker 1:

And one day they knew we were on an excursion and we came home and in our little fridge in our room was the aloe vera. Every single one of us who went on the excursion. They gave fresh leaves of aloe vera in the fridge to cool them off for us to put on our sunburn or the sun that we've got. Pretty awesome.

Speaker 2:

So, depending on where you stay, you would not it's your name, my resort Right day. You would not, right then, you don't necessarily need to bring some aloe vera, but you are going to be in the sun, so keep that in mind, all right, so that's kind of just like what you should kind of pack when you're heading to placentia in belize. What else? So let's talk about rory flights and getting there.

Speaker 1:

Yes, so there are practical things so, for we had flights and getting there, which was also a flight, well, and then a little short van ride, but everyone flies to BZE Belize Cities International Airport and from there we took a little hopper flight, right, yeah, it was really super fun. A domestic flight to Plasencia with Tropic Air.

Speaker 2:

Yes.

Speaker 1:

On Tropic Air.

Speaker 2:

And to get let me just back up a quick second To get to Belize you can fly on Southwest Southwest flies that.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you can fly Southwest there. Yep, love it. And multiple other airlines, we'll get you there as well. Yeah, okay, so a little puddle jumper Once we arrived at BZE, belize Cities, international. Puddle jumper on Tropic.

Speaker 2:

Air which seats that was the smallest plane I've ever been on.

Speaker 1:

I've been on smaller Whatever Of course you know.

Speaker 2:

Like I said earlier, I'm way cooler than you are. Yep, yep, yep, yep.

Speaker 1:

I've actually flown across Houston from one airport to the other-. Whatever In a little Cessna so we could get to the airport on time. Isn't that cool? That's because I know cool people.

Speaker 2:

That's because you're important.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I know cool people like Michael who flew us.

Speaker 2:

That was really awesome. Thanks, Michael.

Speaker 1:

Yep. Thanks, Michael.

Speaker 2:

Okay, well, tropic Air made me feel important and special.

Speaker 1:

It was a super cool flight because you don't get so high and you can see the ground beneath you almost the whole time. So you're looking as you're flying across, you're seeing the country, and the countryside is gorgeous we saw very cool, just multiple terrain.

Speaker 2:

So you're looking out the window. Rory was on one side and I was on the other, and so we got video from both sides. But, um, and even our different sides showed different terrain at different times, which was like cool and bizarre, yeah, but we went from seeing like flat with these windy rivers to all of like these hill, hilly sections and like mountainous sections.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, mountains.

Speaker 2:

And then you'd go into like rainforesty looking stuff and then it would be flat again.

Speaker 1:

And one side of the plane was towards the ocean and the other was towards inland, so it was cool. Depending on which side you sat, you got really different views, so you'll have to check out the video of our in-flight time. It was super fun.

Speaker 2:

Very fun. So there are two different airlines that service you, but, like I said, we did, or like Rory said, we did, tropic Air. And what was cool is you can? We had our time and and Serenium Bay took care of all the details for us, so that was really great we didn't have to think about it. Worry about it. Travel agent can do those same wonderful things for you, yeah real easy.

Speaker 2:

They got that all situated so that was something we did not have to mess with. But they knew when we were coming in into Belize City and booked our flight for like two hours or so after that so that there's plenty of time for customs and immigration, all that stuff and you can fill out your immigration forms in advance so that you're you know you can make it even faster. You get a little qr code on your phone and you can show the people and blah, blah, blah, so you can do a lot of that in advance.

Speaker 2:

But we got like we landed and we didn't want to stick around for two hours yeah, and you don't have to like you can just go to tropic air and say hey, we have this flight at four and they're like it's two o'clock, you can get on, we have one leaving right now and there's room.

Speaker 1:

Go on over. Yeah, which is what happened to us.

Speaker 2:

It was awesome, we got out two hours early and so we think that's kind of like the norm is that they will accommodate you, and so you kind of just want to book a flight with enough time so that you can get your luggage and do all things settle in. However, you need to do that.

Speaker 1:

But when you're ready.

Speaker 2:

it's just yeah, and it's not too big to get from one place to the other and you can just hop along and get where you need to go. So it's fun and easy one place to the other and you can just hop along and get where you need to go. So if you're tired of fun and easy if you're tired of flying.

Speaker 1:

Once you get into the into bze, the airport there in belize city, syrenian bay. If you're staying there, they offer a round trip ride via air-conditioned van along the coastal highway okay, so you can take that as well. I think it's about $550 per person round trip US. So $550 round trip, not one way Round trip US for the van ride. And then you're on the coastal highway. You get to see stuff, but it depends on what you want. Airplane van, both available.

Speaker 2:

Most everybody flies into Belize City, but that's not necessarily.

Speaker 1:

We didn't actually visit Belize City, right, but as any country is, you fly into the major, the largest city in the country. You get to experience a lot of stuff, but it's cool to get out and see the rest of the country and it's been recommended to us that Belize City, while it may be a nice place to visit, it's really cool, really really cool, to get out and see the rest of the country and spend your time in all of the other surrounding places so much to see that's not just city, right yeah?

Speaker 2:

right, okay, rory. So once we get there, like what are we gonna do? Like how are we gonna experience language, culture, money, things like that?

Speaker 1:

let's dive into that well, they made it really simple. For us currency was basically two belizean dollars to one us dollar, so two to one exchange rate. I mean you don't need to exchange cash. Most places will take american, but they'll generally give you change in belizean, so just be prepared for that. Just make sure that when you go your money's in good condition. They don't want it a half torn up dollar bill and things are really hard for.

Speaker 1:

Are old and worn out hard to read because it's hard for them to yeah, it's easier for them to get them exchanged right.

Speaker 2:

So now one cool thing and you can use your credit card in most places yeah, now, if you stay at a place like syrenian bay, which we did there's all inclusive yeah, so then you're not like everything is kind of done.

Speaker 1:

We never did exchange money. Did we Right Like?

Speaker 2:

it's just, we went into town one day and got some ice cream and like that was pretty much, you know if you want to buy a souvenir or something like that.

Speaker 1:

And they gave us change Belizean.

Speaker 2:

So it's just, it's so super easy. Now, what is extra easy? If you are American and you're going to Belize, or if you are American and you're going to Belize, or if you are British and you're going to Belize. Belize was a British colony, and so their main language is English.

Speaker 1:

English.

Speaker 2:

So it is super easy to get around. So again, we've talked about like if you want to go overseas, you can go to England or Australia, new Zealand, like, start with the place that speaks your language and then it's easier for you to adjust to the different country because you're not having that extra learning curve of, like, a foreign language. And so that's the case with Belize. If English is your main language, then you can go to Belize and you can hear other languages as well, which we'll talk about in just a second but English got it going for you. Another thing with the currency and the English language is that their currency has the Queen of England on their bills.

Speaker 1:

Even though there's now the King of England.

Speaker 2:

Yes.

Speaker 1:

Not the.

Speaker 2:

Queen Right, and this was like a younger picture of her too. But they very highly esteem Queen Elizabeth and we were asking the locals they were showing us their bills and what they look like and stuff, because we were curious and they're like, yeah, we really admire the queen. She did such a great job and so even in Belize they still have high regard for their English heritage.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, here's something cool being a guy who likes languages and history and cultures and stuff, or I guess we both do right, mm-hmm, otherwise we wouldn't travel like we do. They have four main cultural groups. The country's made up of it's like a cultural sampler platter, yeah, kind of yes, yes, One which you run into a lot is Creole.

Speaker 2:

We're really connected with that. Yeah, well, you know it's basic.

Speaker 1:

Its root is French. Like the Creole from Haiti, the culture there is descended from the African slaves and European settlers and obviously the French influence from that helped create the language of Creole. It's like a patois of English and French and some of the local languages. It's really an interesting thing. So anyway, creole is one of them.

Speaker 2:

Another one was Mestizo, and that is a blend of Spanish and Mayan heritage, and so the Mestizo peoples brought in their spices, traditions and their cuisine into the culture.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, the Creoles brought rice and beans, stew, chicken, you know things like that. So yeah, each culture brings their own stuff with them. Obviously, Mayan is also another, so they are the indigenous people of Belize.

Speaker 2:

I think they're known for corn mostly right.

Speaker 1:

Well, I've always thought of them as like this ancient sort of mystical thing, but they are still very present there in Belize and you'll find ruins. That's so cool. You can still go to these ancient Mayan ruins there in Belize, food and living descendants who will proudly share their history with you, yeah, and their language, I mean you can speak Mayan we even visited we asked questions and they were teaching us a few things. I don't remember any of them.

Speaker 2:

We visited Cancun a few years ago. Our shuttle driver spoke. Mayan and so it's just it's so cool. All right, this is one I could never remember the name of. It is Garifuna Garifuna, garifuna, garifuna, garifuna.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, so much so she can't remember, I can't, she can't remember how to pronounce it.

Speaker 2:

It just never connected in my brain. It's not something you really hear of, but we heard it like all the time, like this was a big influence in the Placentia area where we were, and so they're known for their drumming, their dancing and their traditions. They are descendants of West Africa, caribs, like Caribbeans and Arawaks.

Speaker 1:

Okay, you're going to talk about that one the Arawaks.

Speaker 2:

No.

Speaker 1:

Okay.

Speaker 2:

But there is a Grufana settlement day on November 19th, like the whole country celebrates this, so we also heard people talk quite a bit about the Mennonite community. That was surrounding them in Palencia.

Speaker 1:

I think that's really interesting. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2:

So there's other cultures that are infused into here but it's quite the cultural mosaic, but the main languages. After English, you're going to find Mayan and Garufana and some Spanish.

Speaker 1:

And Creole. And Creole yeah, yep, yep.

Speaker 2:

All right, Rory, let's talk about planning your stay.

Speaker 1:

Planning. Rory, let's talk about planning your stay, planning your stay. Okay.

Speaker 2:

Where are you going to stay when you go?

Speaker 1:

Well, we stayed at Serenian Bay, so that is what I would definitely recommend If you're going to Plasencia, which is a peninsula that we stayed on. It's 16 miles long. It's pretty narrow. Sometimes you can drive down the road and see the ocean on both sides.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that was so cool.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, super fun. So if you stay on the peninsula, we recommend Cerulean Bay, but there are islands everywhere out there you can stay on, also private islands like you're the only ones on the island with really nice digs, so you can do that. There are rainforests, beaches, Mayan villages Everything's right there within reach Mountains.

Speaker 2:

Rainforest stays. Yeah and everything's right there within reach mountains, it's rainforest stays.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that are like cool, very remote in the rain. Yeah, very remote, very connected to the environment. You stay there, it's all very natural and green and you hike through the rainforest and see the crazy snakes and all the animals and all this kind of thing.

Speaker 2:

Oh, y'all, I was chased by some bird oh, I got chased, I went on a walk and I was trying to like walk the beach or whatever. All of a sudden I heard this squawking, and people do this as an Instagram story or something. But it was like chasing me and it was like this little bird and I've never been chased by a bird.

Speaker 2:

And I had no idea what to do and I started like running a little faster Because I wasn't sure if it was just like trying to be my friend or like mad at me or like cause I couldn't. I mean, I really could not tell.

Speaker 1:

It must've had eggs nearby.

Speaker 2:

That's what? Yeah, that's what one local finally told us. But I would run and then like it flew to catch up with me and then I finally just ran, ran, ran, ran, ran and just like I think it finally gave up on hanging out with me. But it was really bizarre and so I ended up getting video because at first he was super interesting looking bird. That was like our last day, and so the people that took us to the airport, I showed them the video of the bird and they're like we have never seen that bird before.

Speaker 2:

Like locals that have lived there forever had never seen this bird before, so I had some crazy wild bird anyway yeah.

Speaker 1:

So, aside from the bird, not only did we stay at serenium bay, but they did a really cool thing they took us to see other properties as well yeah, so we are going to show you on our socials.

Speaker 2:

This week we're going to give you like a little tour of homes and like a little parade of homes we do, we normally do like a walk with me Wednesday, kind of thing. So you're just going to get a lot of tours on Wednesday from Gecko and they have a lot of these just private homes that you can rent.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, but it's not the same as insurance things. But Gecko, it's easy to remember because of that, right.

Speaker 2:

And we'll put links to that in the show notes. And then Pranamaya is also a very high end, gorgeous place to visit and to stay. You can also stay at the Seba Beach Resort we're going to give you a tour of that beach resort as well and so that is a very relaxing beachfront stay. They have different little villas all throughout their properties and then they have a gorgeous pool super gorgeous.

Speaker 2:

We also had dinner at their restaurant, and so they have a gorgeous pool, super gorgeous. We also had dinner at their restaurant, and so they have a really nice restaurant there so even if you're staying somewhere else, you can go to the different resorts and go to their restaurants, like the restaurants at Seba, and the pools and the beaches all that.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and Seba was really neat. It's very different from Serenian Bay. Serenian Bay has a bit of a more me anyway in my mind an open feel, open feel and seba was like the tropical trees were all around you. So as you're walking from villa to villa, you're walking underneath the trees and these beautiful flowers and stuff. It's an old, very well established resort, whereas serenian bay is newer and just got a different vibe to it. So if you prefer like sleeping in a garden feel, then Seba might be the place for you. Serenity Bay Resort's a more modern, newer resort. They all have the palm trees on the beach and everything like that that you can lounge under, but the Seba just felt like it was an older.

Speaker 1:

The gardens were beautiful, established resort kind of a thing, I would check both of them out, but Serenity Bay is the only all-inclusive in all of Belize, so it's very cool.

Speaker 2:

so another way that we got around from place to place especially like visiting these different properties was the boat rides and that was very cool, and so boat taxis captain jacks again helped with that, and so we got in these boats that just take you through canals and rivers and whatever, and that's how we got to like the gecko properties.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, the different islands where you might stay, the places. We had lunch and things like that, and if you're staying on those islands, that's also how you get back and forth to the mainland.

Speaker 2:

Yeah. So that's another way that you get around if you're not doing the golf cart thing or in addition to the golf cart.

Speaker 1:

Well, the golf cart thing on an island wouldn't be a whole lot of help. So, yeah, you want to call the old water taxi. Oh, another thing too on those private islands you can have your own private chef. I mean what you want, they can provide. It just costs. So you can have your own private chef who cooks two meals a day for you. I think it was, or whatever. It's all available to you there. Just think of what you want, let them know, and they will set the trip up for the way you want it to be, if it's within their power.

Speaker 2:

They want to have you enjoy your stay and continue to come back.

Speaker 1:

Yep.

Speaker 2:

So we'll put links to those. And Serenian Bay again, is where we stayed, so we're going to be diving into that. Later on this month You're going to hear a lot more about that, because we thought it was wonderful enough to just keep talking about and sharing with you.

Speaker 1:

But check out our socials. For the parade of homes I'm excited about that, yeah, really cool tours, and whether or not you want an all-inclusive, luxury or private villa, like well, we had, you might want eco lodging, which is what I was talking about, the rainforest and the mountains Placentia has all of it. And if planning overwhelms you, we stayed with and met some amazing travel agents who can handle everything for you, and we're going to put all of their info in the show notes. So if you need a travel agent, click on the show notes.

Speaker 2:

Yep and Serenium Bay can also help you. Even if you don't stay with Serenium Bay, they can help give you some ideas as well so they're a very welcoming loving place.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, they'll hook you up.

Speaker 2:

All right. So it's totally worth it to have a local expert arrange your itinerary, your excursions, your transport, especially if you're short on time. So, speaking of transport, rory, let's talk about transport.

Speaker 1:

Well, if you're staying in On Placentia or within Placentia golf carts are kind of the way they do you can rent golf carts. Captain Jack's is the place to go for that.

Speaker 2:

Yes, yeah.

Speaker 1:

And that was right across the street from Serenian Bay. As a matter of fact, serenian Bay owns Captain Jack's. Now they bought them out. So, captain Jack's, if you want an excursion or a golf cart, whatever it is, that's the place to get it, they to get it. They're super fun and convenient really nice golf carts, and that's the way to get around.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, we'll be talking about Captain Jack's in our next episode and some of the excursions that you can experience, so make sure you're subscribed so you can check those out.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I'm sure you can rent a car and they also have van shuttles and stuff like that. But to like tool around on your own golf cart?

Speaker 2:

You can do a golf cart Now, because Captain Jack's handled all of our excursions that we did. They include the pickup and drop off directly from where you're staying Totally.

Speaker 1:

And so that made our days like yes, super easy.

Speaker 2:

So that again we ended up not needing golf carts for our stay because we just did excursions and Captain Jack handled all that.

Speaker 1:

But we'll be talking more about our excursions on the next episode. Yes, so stay tuned for that and again, tropic Air, as far as transportation, made it so easy to get in and out of Bailey City and Placentia.

Speaker 2:

So just to kind of recap, you're going to pack smart.

Speaker 1:
